Chinese automaker Chery Automobile Co Ltd is recalling 190,352 Tiggo 5 sport-utility vehicles due to a defective wiring harness, China's top quality watchdog said on Friday.

The main wiring harness terminal of the vehicle’s engine electronic control unit may have water inflow or contamination. In extreme cases, the vehicle cannot be started or may lose power.

The recall, which will start from August 15, involves Tiggo 5 vehicles manufactured between July 13, 2013 and September 13, 2017, according to a statement on the website of the State Administration for Market Regulation.

Chery Automobile Co Ltd will install a waterproof cover in defective vehicles free and check whether the electronic control unit is faulty. The company will replace the unit for free to eliminate potential safety hazards.

The company will notify relevant car owners by telephone, SMS message, registered mail and other methods.

Owners can call customer service hotline 400-883-8888 or contact authorized Chery dealers. They can also find more information on the company’s WeChat account and leave details of any defects their vehicles might have.
