More quality agricultural produce from across China will be available in Shanghai in a local government initiative to help poverty-stricken regions.

They will be available at 55 specialty stands and shops across the city, from vegetable markets to supermarkets such as Carrefour, highlighted by Shanghai Commission of Commerce after market research.

The products are from the five areas in western China — Yunnan Province, Zuiyi in Guizhou Province, Kashgar in Xinjiang, Rikaze in Tibet and Guoluo in Qinghai Province. They will include Xinjiang dates, Zunyi beef and Tibetan highland barley and so on.

Wang Hua, director of the Shanghai Cooperation and Exchange Assistance League for Empowerment said: “This is a new effort to utilize consumption to alleviate poverty, and in the future, the city will increase more such specialty stands to help quality goods enter the Shanghai market.”

Produce will also be available online from retailers such as Freshippo, Dingdong and Bright Dairy.

Live broadcasting platforms such as Douyin, Xiaohongshu and Taobao will also promote sales.

According to the commerce commission, the online and offline enterprises taking part should help to sell over 10,000 tons of produce.
