Urban management information infrastructure will be improved by use of digital grid technology, covering real-time control of traffic, garbage facilities and toilet operations as well as 3D mapping, local officials and companies said at the weekend.

More than 30 organizations including the Shanghai Data Exchange Co, China Mobile and China Telecom attended a meeting on urban management.

Based on the new technology, each “grid” represents a street, block, shopping mall, or tourism site. Unified standards on data, operation and the Internet of Things devices are to be established and managed, in a visualized mapping way. The system already covers around 60 streets, and will soon cover more than 200, said Wang Mingqiang of the Shanghai Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

“We welcome more companies and developers join the project and make Shanghai a more intelligent city,” Wang said.

Based on the new grid network, open data and improved management at district and street levels, urban management has improved a lot on precision of location, process efficiency and response speed, according to the Shanghai Data Exchange.

The new management system has integrated data from about 20 city-level bureaus, said Tang Qifeng, CEO of the data exchange firm.
