Free, high-quality video-streaming services are now available on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed railway, and more rail routes will offer similar services in the future, according to authorities.

Passengers on trains between Beijing and Shanghai can watch thousands of selected films, TV series, kids' programs and entertainment shows over an app called Suike, developed by iQiyi.

Through free in-cabin WiFi, passengers can watch videos smoothly even while traveling at 350 kilometers per hour, according to CRGT, a technology subsidiary under China Railway.

The new services feature technologies including edge computing, which allow smooth data transmission.

The service will be gradually expanded to cover 2 billion rail visits annually, said Nasdaq-listed iQiyi.
