The Shanghai-based Jin Xing Dance Theater will present “Dance@Shanghai” at Shanghai Grand Theater on December 19 and 20 to mark the 20th anniversary of the company’s establishment.

Founded in 1999 by its artistic director Jin Xing, the dance company is the country’s first private performing arts troupe.

Under the lead of celebrity transsexual dancer Jin, who is also a choreographer and a talk show anchor, the troupe has been frequently invited to international festivals and performed in nearly 20 countries covering four continents.

The dance theater is known for its intriguing adaptation of modern Western dance styles, while remaining distinctively contemporary Chinese style, borrowing the nation’s rich heritage culture as a major source of inspiration.

The company’s signature choreography “Black and Red” received the Ministry of Culture’s award for best contemporary art, which will be presented during “Dance@Shanghai” together with other signature works of “Half Dream,” “Steps” and “Cage Birds.”

Shanghai Grand Theater revealed the troupe initially planned only one performance in Shanghai on December 20, but tickets for the performance sold fast so the troupe decided to rearrange its touring schedule to add another performance on December 19.
