Midlife crises in fast-paced modern society is delicately depicted in the urban drama “If Time Flows Back,” being aired on Dragon TV.

Told from a male perspective, the series provides insight into middle-age confusion and pressure that has spawned online discussions about topics such as domestic violence and soul infidelity.

The 45-episode drama centers on three men’s special journey, all of whom face love, marriage and career crises.

On their journeys of redemption and self-discovery, they come to understand their responsibilities, providing a new take on life.

Jin Dong plays the lead role of Bai Zhiyong, a 40-something man with both a failed career and marriage.

“He is at a loss because of the burden and sudden changes of life,” said Jin. “In our lives, there are many ordinary people who have very similar experiences.”

The 44-year-old actor thinks middle-age people are society’s backbone, but are stressed due to work and family life and have little time to contemplate their innermost feelings and desires.

Jin was attracted to the film’s script because it is told from a male perspective, unlike most TV series.

“In many cases, women handle stress better than men,” he said. “Many women in China have learned to express their feelings and pains, but it is still difficult for men.”

Born in Jining, Shandong Province, Jin is a graduate of the Central Academy of Drama’s Acting Department.

His performance in the film “Autumnal Rain” garnered a Best Actor Nomination for the 2015 Huabiao Awards, one of China’s three main film awards.

In 2014, he won the Best Supporting Actor for the TV series “Legend of Entrepreneurship” at the Asia Rainbow TV Awards.

In 2015, Jin rose to fame for his role as a spy in the TV drama “The Disguiser.”

“Life cannot start over again, and you cannot undo many things,” he said. “My approach to life is to refrain from complaining, make the most of every day and do my best.”

In the series, actress Jiang Xin portrays an outgoing tour guide who helps the three men find their true selves, despite being a domestic-violence survivor.

“The drama is realistic and thought-provoking,” said Jiang.

“It beckons people to cherish what they already have, such as marriage and family. To some extent, marriage is just like a plant that requires daily attention. Understanding, trust and honesty are indispensable.”
