Ecological garden

With an investment of over 22 million yuan (US$3 million), the ecological garden is the first seedling production project approved by the flower expo, which will also witness a floral innovation hub for top seedling companies to develop and showcase their latest gardening developments.

Covering an area of more than 200,000 square meters in Chongming’s Hexing Village, the event plays host to a mega intelligent flower seedling base, which includes a highly automated planting line, producing about 200 million seedlings every year.

The outdoor exhibiting area spreads up to 50,000 square meters, with various types of floral projects on display, such as patterned flowerbeds, rock gardens, water applications and three-dimensional landscapes.

Visitors also can enjoy galleries, shade-tolerant plants, containers and edible gardens.

The indoor exhibiting area focuses more on diversified domestic and foreign flower breeders in long-term cooperation with Yuanyi Seedling Co.

Appointed visits are open to flower experts and industry insiders across the country.

Design competition

A Flowerbed Border Design Competition was launched last month. A flowerbed border is a major European garden design, which has been quickly adopted and developed in China over the past few years.

The competition seeks to explore the display form of flowerbed borders and attract distinguished designers in the flower expo warm-up events.

To test contestants’ garden design knowledge and ability, entrants are permitted to create their artwork with no limit on plant materials.

They are also required to integrate their design seamlessly with the construction.

Ten designs from Beijing, Jiangsu, Guangdong and Sichuan have been selected and are on display at Yuanyi Ecological Base in Chongming since this month. The top winners will be announced on June 30.

Chongming celebrated its one-year countdown to the flower expo last week. The expo will take place in the district from May 21 till July 2 next year with the theme “Blossom with a Chinese Dream.” It is the first flower expo on an island embraced by villages and forests.

As one of China’s three major islands with rich ecological assets, Chongming boasts a forest coverage range of 25 percent and serves as the main water source of Shanghai.

Renowned for its 500-year-old flower cultivation history, Chongming aims to paint a beautiful picture of blooming blossoms and fulfill a “flower island” vision through the flower expo.

Visitors are welcome to enjoy the island’s pristine natural reserves, leisurely village life and delightful floral scenery.
