Coles' booth in the food and agricultural products hall was unsurprisingly packed with people around lunch time. The crowds were drawn by the smell of grilled Angus steaks that the Australian based supermarket chain have on show.

Nick Alston, head of legal for Coles Export, told Shanghai Daily the company will establish a Shanghai office in early 2020.

Australian beef was put under the spotlight after PwC released a report claiming every second kilo of Australian beef sold in China is actually fake meat.

Alston said he had read about the news but that he could not agree with the report.

"We have been exporting beef to China for over 12 years,” he said, before adding that it would be tough to make fake Coles beef because of their high-tech packaging.
