The nation’s first database on children’s genetic kidney disease was launched today, allowing domestic hospitals to share information and improve treatment effects, as well as boost genetics studies.

Led by local experts from the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and Shanghai Medical Association, the database now integrates patient information and research results from 13 leading hospitals in the nation, whose capabilities in genetic diagnosis technology is improving quickly, allowing for early and accurate diagnosis and treatment.

But there is a lack of broad studies on incidences of children’s genetic kidney disease, key responsible genes and patient distribution across the nation.

“So establishment of the database is extremely useful for doctors and researchers,” said Dr Xu Hong from the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University and head of the program.

“Genetic testing can ensure sick children receive precise diagnoses and treatment while avoiding unnecessary treatment. The database is a guidance to all medical staff.”

So far, the database (whose website is www.ccgkdd.com.cn) has collected information on 425 types of genetic kidney disease, relevant mutated genes and cases. The database is expected to expand quickly after its launch, experts predict.
