The scene after a fire in which an e-bike was destroyed and a building in a residential complex damaged.

A man has been detained for 10 days after an e-bike he was charging in a residential building caught fire, police said on Monday.

The incident took place in a residential complex on Shengli Road in Qingpu District at 10pm on December 22 last year.

No one was injured in the fire, police said, but there was damage to the building.

The man surnamed Wei told police he pulled an electrical cord from his apartment to charge his e-bike on the first floor of the building.

Wei said he was aware there was an e-bike charger in his residential complex and that fire control rules banned charging of e-bike in residential buildings, but he did it for convenience, police said.

Wei’s e-bike was destroyed, while the walls in the building were smoke-damaged and the building's door key system destroyed. Police said the damage caused by the fire was estimated to be 10,000 yuan (US$1,434).

Owners who break e-bike charging rules face fines from the fire authority and if damage is caused could face detention or criminal charges.
