Wu Bin (right), vice director of Minhang District, launches a discounted set of face masks from Korean brand WellDerma during a livestream.

“Three, two, one, go!” Wu Bin, vice director of Minhang District, on Thursday evening launched a discounted set of face masks by Korean brand WellDerma during a livestream on Douyin, also known as TikTok.

The set, with five boxes of masks, was sold for 98 yuan (US$14) compared to its original price of 296 yuan. A total of 2,200 sets were on offer and half of them were sold in the first minute.

The five-hour event at the Hongqiao Import Commodity Exhibition and Trading Center was a prelude to the Double Five Shopping Festival. After Wu, anchors from Radio Shanghai promoted around 50 food, cosmetics and skincare products, and household supplies and bags from brands that included Unilever, Lego and Pasabahce.

Zhu Jing, a spokeswoman for the center, said it will offer 5,500 products during the shopping festival at around 55 percent of their original price.

The livestream will continue over the following four days in Qibao Ancient Town, Wanda Plaza in Zhuanqiao Town, Yongde Pedestrian Road in Wujing Town and POPC shopping mall with products from a variety of enterprises in Minhang, such as Bright Dairy, Hot Wind and Pepsi-Cola.

“The COVID-19 outbreak has restrained citizens’ consumption desire and now with the pandemic brought under control domestically and the economy gradually getting back on track, there is a trend of consumption rebound,” said Wu. “Consumption is one of the key driving forces for economic growth. By promoting consumption, we hope to promote economic development in Minhang and Shanghai as a whole.”

The shopping festival will run to the end of October.

Besides livestreaming sales, almost 10,000 shops in 40 commercial complexes in the district will also offer promotion activities and discounts. For example, the Bailian Nanfang Shopping Mall will give out 10 million yuan in coupons with products priced at 55 percent of their original price and the Skymall will offer 100-yuan coupons for 10 yuan each. People will also be able to participate in lucky draws if they spend 55 yuan or more and display their bills online.

There are also plenty of choices for nightlife in Minhang. Ala Town will stage a beer carnival with snacks from all over the world; Jinjiang Amusement Park will host a carnival for visitors to enjoy crayfish and beer from May through August and a night adventure program for children.

The district’s WeChat account “Minhang Today” will share more sales information and release a shopping map.
