Shanghai Customs has recently seized 880 smuggled amber jewellery products which were falsely declared as common ornaments on import documents, authorities announced.

The case occurred on May 21 when customs officers were checking imported goods at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport. Officers noticed that one package, declared to contain "necklaces," seemed suspicious.

They checked the package and found 60 pieces of amber jewellery products, which were worth far more than their declared value of 1,282.50 yuan (US$180).

According to customs, it has recently seized nine batches of amber jewellery imported from Poland and the Republic of Lithuania that were declared as cheap, low-priced ornaments.

Meanwhile, on the same day when the 60 pieces of amber jewellery products were found, customs officers in the Waigaoqiao bonded area returned more than 50 tons of solid waste.

The waste, declared as "polycrystalline silicon" for bonded storage, was found actually to be broken pieces of silicon wafers, silicon discs and silicon particles.

The customs' anti-smuggling department is investigating the case, authorities said.
