US company Riot Games, one of the world's leading video game developers and e-sports operators, will locate its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Shanghai, local authorities confirmed.

According to the Shanghai Municipal Press and Publication Bureau, it signed a strategic cooperation memorandum with Riot Games on Tuesday.

Riot Games, with headquarters in Los Angeles, the United States, is the developer of League of Legends. In 2019, the company opened its China headquarters in Shanghai.

Shanghai is striving to build itself into a "global e-sports city." Statistics show that the revenue of Shanghai's online games industry in 2019 was 80.2 billion yuan (US$11.3 billion), with a yearly increase of 12.3 percent.
