Nearly 2 million residents took part in air-raid drills on Saturday, with sirens sounding across the city at 11:35am.

This year’s drills were carried out in more than 3,000 communities and 1,600 schools, on a larger scale than in previous years.

At Junior High School Affiliated to Shanghai Science and Technology University in Yangpu District, 500 students and nearby residents were evacuated with the guidance of local civil defense officers.

As soon as the sound of the siren filled the air, students left classrooms and followed evacuation routes to the garage, the designated shelter of the school. Emergency supplies, first-aid treatment and mental consulting were also provided.

Special health control measures were also taken including temperature monitoring and safe distancing before entering the shelter.

After the all-clear sound stopped at 11:58am, the shelter gate was opened.

According to headmaster Cao Rong, in addition to the National Defense Education Day drill, there are multiple activities to raise student awareness in their daily school life, including safety education classrooms and drills during morning exercise.

“We have a civil defense competition organized twice a year, which will also be joined by local residents," said Cao. "It’s important for students to receive this knowledge from everyday life."
