Ban ki-moon calls political, business leaders to tackle climate change

DAVOS, Switzerland, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Friday that he wanted government and business leaders to tackle the climate change with ambitious commitment and decisive actions.

"Climate change has been in the top of our agenda for many years, but without much satisfactory progress because of different national interests," he said in a discussion in the World Economic Forum annual meeting.

The UN chief said it's a misperception that tackling climate would affect or reduce the capacity for global economic growth. Instead, tackling climate change will put the world onto a sustainable path for development and the two issues are in fact mutually reinforcing and mutually supporting.

Ban said he invited all government and business leaders as well as civil society leaders to the climate change summit which will be only dedicated on climate change at the United Nations on September 23.

"For the government leaders, first please bring your ambitious target and ambitious commitment to tackle this climate change, "he said.

"And second, please capitalize your decisive actions on the ground on all the challenges which we are facing in our planet, " he added.

As for the business leaders, he suggested that the financiers or bankers to increase finance support to low-carbon energy and climate resilient infrastructure and increase deployment of climate bonds.
