2 inmates killed, 8 injured in prison riot in northeast Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 13 (Xinhua) -- At least two inmates were killed and eight others were injured Thursday during a riot in a prison located in Brazil's northeastern state of Pernambuco, local officials said.

The riot began Thursday morning when inmates protested against the prison's bad conditions, mistreatment and the food's poor quality in Sao Joao prison, in Itamaraca city, some 50 kilometers from the capital of Pernambuco.

Marcelus Ugiette, Criminal Enforcement Official from Pernambuco 's Public Prosecutor's Office, confirmed that some 60 percent of the inmates took part in the riot.

The prison is overpacted, housing 1,870 prisoners in the facility with a designed capacity of only 650, according to Pernambuco's Social Rehabilitation Secretariat.

According to local media, occasional gun shots were heard from the prison and some inmates were seen on the roof carrying home- made weapons.

The injured inmates were taken to a nearby hospital, though their state of health is unknown.
