Buildings to get quotas for energy consumption
CHINA will release energy consumption quotas for buildings that will help their owners accelerate upgrading with new energy-saving technologies, an industry expert told a media briefing in Shanghai yesterday.
Zhu Weifeng, professor of Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences, said the quotas will vary according to a building’s location and whether they are for residential purposes or for public use. But Zhu didn’t elaborate on the details.
The adoption of green technology is expected to cut China’s dependence on imported energy, said Xu Dong, energy efficiency business development director at Siemens. China’s reliance on foreign oil and gas reached 58.1 percent and 31.6 percent respectively in 2013, according to Xu.
“China is diversifying efforts to reduce energy consumption in sectors like buildings and transport. (However), the industrial sector got most of the attention in the past,” said Xu.
Buildings consume 41 percent of the world’s energy each year, Xu said.
