CETC software center for Shanghai

CHINA Electronics Technology Group Corp (CETC), which provides IT products and services for military and civil use, yesterday announced a 12-million-yuan (US$1.76 million) investment to set up a software application research center in Shanghai.

The center represents the country's rapid development in the software industry and was another central government-owned enterprise's investment in the city, industry officials said.

CETC, which owns more than 200 subsidiary firms nationwide, will research and develop software, platforms and applications for the subsidiaries in the center. It will be operated by Shanghai-based iSoft Infrastructure Software Co, a CETC subsidiary.

"Shanghai has become an important national software development base, and it has a nice innovation environment for investment thanks to infrastructure and rich talent resources," said Zou Nairui, vice general manager of CETC.

In the first 10 months, China's software industry jumped 20 percent to 769.1 billion yuan, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Shanghai has developed itself as a regional software research center because more companies and investment have chosen the city, said Shao Zhiqing, vice director of the Shanghai Municipal Economic and Information Technology Develop Commission.

Top global software and IT service giants such as SAP, Oracle and Microsoft have set up facilities for innovation in Shanghai.
