Chengdu promotes agricultural produce to NZ

CHENGDU, capital of Sichuan Province in southwest China, promoted its farm products at a business promotion event yesterday.

In a ceremony held in Hamilton, the fourth largest city of New Zealand, Chengdu Mayor Luo Qiang said his city is well known for grain, edible oil, tea, fruit and vegetable, mushroom, and spice production. “Chengdu is also famous for its farm machinery and food processing industries and has the largest agricultural market in western China,” he said.

Chengdu is the hometown of Giant Pandas. The city is historic, modern and creative with titles such as “Model city for investment in inland China,” “City of Gastronomy” and “Best Tourist Cities in China”, Luo added.

The mayor told the audience more about this vibrant city of over 20 million people, citing the world heritage site, Mount Qingcheng and Dujiangyan Irrigation System, an annual GDP of over 1 trillion yuan (US$147 billion), the presence of 16 consulate generals, 278 of the Fortune 500 companies, 101 airline routes and an annual volume of 46 million air travelers.

Besides, Sichuan Airlines opened Chengdu-Auckland direct flight on Tuesday.

The inaugural Chengdu-Auckland Flight 3U8909 left Chengdu at 1:45am Tuesday and arrived in Auckland at 6:45pm the same day. The trip took about 13 hours.

The return flight 3U8910 left Auckland at 8:30pm on Tuesday and arrived in Chengdu around 6am the next day.

With the daylight-saving schedule effective from September 26, Flight 3U8909 will depart from Chengdu at 1:55am and arrives in Auckland at 7:45pm; while Flight 3U8910 will leave Auckland at 9:30pm and arrives in Chengdu at 6am the next day.
