Glass factory is punished with largest pollution fine
A glass manufacturer has been fined 8.5 million yuan (US$1.33 million) for discharging pollutants into the air in Jiading New Town.
It was the single highest fine for violating environmental protection in the district last year.
Jiading’s environmental supervision team checked the glass factory on November 6, and found it discharging pollutants exceeding national standards.
When the team checked the factory again on November 20, it was still found discharging pollutants.
Last year, Jiading punished six enterprises with total fines of 17.66 million yuan. Eight enterprises were ordered to suspend production and nine were closed down or their management detained.
The total bill for environmental violations rose to over 60 million yuan.
In addition, 10 cases alleged to have violated Chinese laws were handed over to public security department for investigation. Several electroplate factories were closed down and 12 production lines were dismantled over discharges of heavy metals.
Some factory owners stop production during the day and work at night to avoid detection, thus law enforcement teams deliberately check factories at night.
Law enforcement officers found an enterprise discharging waste water into an inspection shaft directly on Zhudai Road. After collecting samples for evidence, the enterprise was investigated, punished and related equipment sealed.
“By serious checks and punishment, on the one hand we cracked down on environmental protection violators, and on the other hand warned other enterprises to ensure the normal operation of related facilities and put an end to discharging exceeding standards,” Chen Yandong, director of Jiading Environmental Monitoring Station, said.
