Students revive a traditional craft
A group of four students from Shanghai Art & Design Academy have established a studio to revive Jiading’s traditional straw weaving techniques with modern designs.
The Xunyi Grass Weaving Studio, which in Chinese means “the studio finding the lost traditional art,” was led by sophomore student Jiang Cenghao who majors in computer art design.
After early preparations, Jiang and his team members realized the studio would fail to keep up with the market if they simply imitated traditional straw weaving works.
“Original design is the only way to revive straw weaving art,” said Jiang, who is now making efforts to remove the old-fashioned impression of Xuhang straw weaving by applying modern and practical designs on the basis of traditional techniques.
Since the establishment of the studio in 2016, Jiang and his team have launched a wide variety of products including cup sets, vases, small ornaments, slippers and other handicrafts.
The studio has also tried combining straw weaving techniques with other artistic forms such as leather ware and lacquer painting.
After a number of marketing activities, Jiang and his team found that most customers are young art lovers.
A new product called Ningcao made of straw weaving and glue was launched to cater to the taste of younger customers.
The product priced at 30-50 yuan (US$4.77-7.95) is made of yellow straw which is sealed into colorful transparent glue.
The high popularity of Ningcao helped the team win a silver medal at the 2016 China College Student’ Entrepreneurship Competition.
Last year, the studio also participated in a cross-Strait youth cultural and creative design exhibition in Taiwan Island.
Recently, Jiang took works to an exhibition in Guangzhou and his products all sold out and were well-received.
“We are young and not afraid of failure. We have time to start it all over again,” said Jiang.
