Where to see lotus at their best

SUMMER is here and lotus are blooming in Jiading. So where should you go to enjoy the spreading leaves and vibrant flowers?

Guyi Garden

A lotus and water lily show has opened in Guyi Garden in Nanxiang Town, where more than 600 varieties and 10,000 plants are awaiting visitors. Water lilies and lotus with blooms of red, white, yellow, pink and orange are grown in the 1,000-square-meter water area, including more than 50 rare and unusual varieties such as “Space No 36,” “Queen Caroline” and “West Lake Red Lotus.”

The exhibition runs until August 3, though the water lilies will still be in bloom through the end of August.

Opening hours: Through August 3, 7am–6pm

Admission: 12 yuan

How to get there: Take Metro line 11, get off at Nanxiang Station and transfer to any one of Nanxiang No. 1, 2, 3 and 5 buses.

Chenjiashan Lotus Park

A dozen kinds of lotus in the 800-square-meter pond in Chenjiashan Lotus Park have recently come into bloom, attracting visitors from afar with their color and fragrance.

Opening hours: Daily, 24 hours

Admission: Free

Address: West of the intersection of Liuhu Road and Shengzhu Road, Jiading Town

How to get there: Take buses — Jiadian line, Jiatai line, Jiading No. 6 and get off at the Shengzhu Road and Qipan Road intersection or take Bus Jiading No. 7 to get off at the Liuhu Road and Shuping Road intersection.

Liuyun Park

Lotus have recently come into bloom at Liuyun Park, the north central park of Nanxiang, attracting both nearby residents and visitors from downtown.

Opening hours: Daily, 24 hours

Admission: Free

Address: Fanglin Road and Haoxiang Road, Nanxiang Town

Huating Farmer’s Home

Eight species of lotus will soon come into full bloom in a one-hectare pond.

Opening hours: Daily, 8am–4:30pm

Admission: 15 yuan

Address: 518 Shuangzhu Rd, Huating Town

How to get there: Buses — Jiahua line, Jiatanghua branch line and Beihua line

Tips:

Experts suggest visitors view lotus in the morning as the blooms are at their best early in the day. The optimum time for photographing them is in the morning or between 4pm and 6pm, when the light is also softer.

Other top spots in Shanghai

Gucun Park

There are 20 hectares of lotus from a dozen species in the park. They usually come into bloom at the end of June and reach their peak in late July. Some species flower until September.

Wujing Park

The park plants nearly 3,000 square meters featuring lotus from more than 30 species.

Shanghai Grand View Garden

There are 27,000 square meters of lotus from 15 species in the garden. Every year the garden holds a lotus exhibition.

Minhang Sports Park

The park has 900 aquatic plants from 52 species. It holds an aquatic plants exhibition every year to showcase Victoria amazonica and other tropical water lilies.
