Reading meaning into our words

The Sound,” a popular TV show where actors participate in a voice competition of dubbing and reading letters or poems, has inspired Minhang District’s participation in a new Shanghai project.

The district plans to create 100 “reading boxes” where residents can record their readings. The first two boxes have made installed in Minhang District Library.

More boxes will be located in bookshops, shopping malls, university campuses, cinemas and local neighborhood centers this year.

The boxes look a bit like the mini karaoke booths found in every shopping mall. The three-meter high boxes can accommodate only one person at a time and come equipped with advanced recording gear.

The boxes provide about 80 classics that users may select from for a reading choice. However, everyone is free to read something from outside those listings.

The first reading is free, and a small charge is levied on subsequent readings. Users can log into the system and pay with through their WeChat accounts. Users who like their performances can share them online.

“I just took my child to the library one afternoon and overhead someone reading something by the 20th-century poet Zhu Ziqing,” said Zhang Yimin, who was standing in a queue in front of one of the reading boxes. “It was very passionate and I was touched. I decided to try reading myself.”

He added: “It’s so nice to bring the beauty of literature into everyday busy lives.”

The Shanghai Culture, Radio Broadcasting, Film and Television Administration said that the purpose of the “reading box” project is to encourage people to take a break from the daily hustle-bustle and indulge in some quiet culture.

Within months, reading competitions are expected to be staged, with entries from works recorded in the boxes. Winners will get the chance to appear on reading shows hosted by radio and television stations.
