Centuries old harbor gives birth to renaissance

A 155-year-old shipyard on 1777 Binjiang Avenue has been remarkably renovated and turned into a stunning cultural and commercial complex.

The site, formerly occupied by Shanghai Shipyard, which was once owned by the British Xiangsheng Shipyard (Boyd and Co) back in 1862, is the last piece of land to be redeveloped within the Lujiazui Financial City.

The development, now named MIFA 1862, features a 16,000-square-meter shopping mall and an 800-seated theater.

Steps away, the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Shanghai Jinmao Tower, Shanghai Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center can be seen.

China State Shipbuilding Corp partnered up with CITIC Ltd to turn the shipyard, one of a few significant industrial sites in the area, into another waterfront cultural icon at the core area of Lujiazui.

Some old structures, such as twisted chimneys, metal supports, rusty iron pipes and weathered concrete columns, have been preserved, renovated and used again.

The steam pipes were converted into air conditioner pipes, while some obsolete industrial materials were redesigned and are now signs and marks. Hence, beauty through the ages is preserved in a reasonable way.

The MIFA 1862 is just a fraction of Lujiazui Harbor City which also contains financial institutions, commercial landmarks, luxury residential areas and luxury hotels.

World famous master architects and architecture firms, including OMA, Kengo Kuma, KPF BENOY and Arquitectonica, have joined forces to create an upscale urban complex at the Lujiazui Central Business District.

The district will be energized by large-scale public art by the world’s leading and emerging artists.

At present, Mass Energy 1862, a contemporary art exhibition, is being held and will run through January 29.

To build a world-class urban public art zone, and a rising landmark along Huangpu River, Harbor City has ambitions to produce a public art space of the highest level with a collection of the best in the arts.

Moreover, the CBD in Lujiazui Financial City, which covers roughly 1.7 square kilometers, will become a center for business travel and leisure activities. It includes riverside space, central green space, Fucheng Road, Aurora Museum, Oriental Pearl Square, Super Brand Mall, IFC Mall, Shanghai Tower, Jinmao Tower and Shanghai World Financial Center.

After years of construction and renovation, the riverbank in Pudong has shrugged off the past look of being crowded with old factories, warehouses and wharfs.

Now, green zones, parks, waterside pavilions, landmark buildings and public spaces along the bank have greatly improved the environment and city landscape.

The riverside tourism and leisure industrial belt is divided into northern and southern zones.

The northern part features the Pudong Culture Pavilion, Dongchang Cinema, the Shanghai Shipyard area and the Minsheng Wharf complex. It will mainly cater to a variety of cultural and musical performances.

A variety of festivals have been held here, such as the World Dance Championship, the Riverside International Beer Festival and Pudong Culture and Art Festival. The Lujiazui Financial Cultural Festival has been successfully held for many years.

The southern part includes Dongchang Riverside Green Space, Jolly House, Lao Baidu Riverside Green Space and the sculpture park — an ideal place for leisure activities.
