Transforming the science and manufacturing industry

Work has begun on an advanced manufacturing industry park in Lingang amid Zhangjiang and Lingang’s joint efforts to promote the development of high-end industries and the construction of intelligent manufacturing center at the southeast tip of Pudong.

Zhangjiang Science and Technology Port & Advanced Manufacturing Industry Park is being built in the comprehensive zone of Lingang, as part of a cooperation between the two key areas of Pudong.

In line with the blueprint, 180,000 square meters of pilot scale testing facilities, as well as R&D centers, will be built at the new park occupying an area of 7.33 hectares.

The park’s future development will focus on manufacturing precision instruments, apparatus, key technologies and equipment of intelligent manufacturing and next generation information and communications technology.

It will put the key technology of Zhangjiang Science City into pilot testing and industrialized production and assist the development of the AI and the robotics industry in Lingang New Town. Hence, both sides will bring the process of research, pilot testing and industrialization closer together.

The future goals of the industry park also include the development of three pillar industries: high-end intelligent equipment, marine equipment and intelligent automobile and the expansion of emerging industries, such as software and information services, integrated circuit and special equipment, aeronautical and space technologies and energy saving and environmental protection.

The park will play an important role to provide the city key technical support.

The first four key projects at the industry park involve the precision equipment, core technology development and industrialization of AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode), the next generation intelligent identification equipment for police identity, the establishment of aeronautical carbon fiber detection and innovation center and the R&D and industrialization of automotive lightweight materials.

The park is an attempt of Zhangjiang to spearhead deep into Pudong since the science city has ambitions to be on a par with California’s Silicon Valley, Singapore’s One North Science Park and Japanese Tsukuba scientific town. And it will establish a basic framework for a comprehensive national scientific center by 2020.

Zhangjiang is in the north of the Pudong New Area and covers 80 square kilometers, including half that belongs to the China (Shanghai) Free Trade Zone.

As the site of one of China’s first state-level high-tech zones, Zhangjiang has gathered rich resources in scientific and technological innovation, since over 10,000 companies have registered there. They mainly cover information technology, bio-medicine, cultural creativity and low-carbon environmental protection. It also plays its role as a base for basic research and features several platforms for big science, such as the National Center for Protein Science Shanghai and the Shanghai Supercomputer Center.

Lingang is on the shore of the East China Sea. Taking full advantage of its exclusive and rich marine resources, the modern coastal town has mapped out an ocean blue print of the 21st century toward a brighter future.

An industrial development system led by high end marine equipment and manufacturing, with the strategic emerging sectors and the marine industry park as its two wings, has been formed in the area to accelerate the development of the marine industry amid its integration with abundant marine resources.

The next step is to create an advanced industrial chain featuring deep sea technology, marine observations, key technology of ship building and marine resources development and utilization as its core businesses, as well as a cluster of marine industry and scientific research with global influence.

Lingang has been given the green light to build itself into a National Marine Economy Demonstration Zone. Hence it will become a forerunner around the country to explore how to best optimize the layout of the maritime economy, construct modern marine industry systems, strengthen ocean-related infrastructure, improve marine public service system, build a blue eco-security shield and innovate marine administration system.

Enterprises and research institutions based in Lingang have carried out a number of commercial and scientific projects to help fulfill the ambition.
