When the factory becomes the playground

CHILDREN naturally want to spend holidays with their parents, be it a beach resort or a messy, boring workplace. And it has become an annual tradition for children in Shishi, southeast China’s Fujian Province, to visit their parents and spend days at some of the garment factories.

The summer months are usually the busiest time of the year in the garment factories there. In addition to summer products, factories need to get ready for the fall and winter trends for big holidays ahead — Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year.

Allowing the children whose both parents work full-time during summer holidays to stay at the workplace not only helps the parents keep an eye on their children, but also offers opportunities for more family time.

For some of the children, the factory workshop is the most favorable family retreat every year with the comfort of air-conditioning and fun time with their peer playmates. They also learn the safety rules at the workplace and try not to disturb their parents when they are busy.

They know where to find a corner to read and do their homework, and how to play a game quietly with friends.

When the new school semester begins, the children will leave the workplace, safe and sound.
