Treasure trove of art to go under the hammer

ANTIQUES, ink-wash and oil paintings and calligraphy works are among hundreds of items that will go under the hammer at the 2017 Poly Autumn Auction at Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai on December 8.
Some of the most important works will be previewed on December 6-7.
The auction will also include antiques, vintage books, Buddha statues, jewelry and luxury watches.
The highlight will be a 1925 painting by Qi Baishi (1864-1957), wich is considered one of his most representative works.
Qi is widely considered one of the greatest Chinese painters of the 20th century. His paintings epitomize Chinese tradition in an innovative form and style.
Although his art was inspired by nature, often depicting animals, insects and flowers, he painted in a unique style.
He once said: “The excellence of a painting lies in its being alike, yet unlike. Too much likeness flatters the vulgar taste, while too much unlikeness deceives the world.”
Apart from traditional art, the auction also includes nearly 100 Western canvases from the 19th century.
These oil paintings vary in subject and style and will have no reserve price.
Paintings by Jean August Dominique Ingres (1780-1867) and Jean Baptise Camille Corot (1796-1875) are among those on offer.
