An MUN journey to tackle global economic issues

The journey of Model United Nations throughout the 2017/2018 academic year has been a wonder to experience. Spanning from our first conference of SHAMUN (Shanghai American’s MUN) held in SAS Pudong, to SHIMUN (Dulwich College Pudong’s MUN) in Dulwich and all the way through our four successful journeys this year, MUN is one of SSIS’s most popular after school program, hobbies and passion.

As a delegate I have realized that MUN first looks like a place and event where you must turn up with truckloads of research papers, formal phrases and attire to speak and wear, but it is way more than just that.

MUN is a platform that when you enter, you make your first step into the realm of understanding politics, growth, world development and problem-solving abilities.

It is like one big economics, geography, and history lesson. It explores the concepts of strengthening trade, solving wars, conflicts spanning centuries and more.

It molds the brain into a shape where Math, science and English can connect with global perspectives and our conduct can enhance because of how much we actually want to resolve the issues on which we debate. It sends us into a state where we feel self-confident and aware of the world we are in, but subsequently sends us into a state of guilt and insecurity of how this world’s people are growing so dangerously self-oriented.

This is stimulating the next generation to be problem solvers, compassionate humanitarian workers and a set of minds that will successfully counter world issues.

One of my friends, and a passionate MUN delegate, Gleb Tsikhanovich sums his MUN experience as, “Model United Nations provides you with knowledge about the country you are representing but also how countries work together and how they make up the world that we live in. Another thing that is great about MUN is debating and problem solving. You get to solve world pressing issues. It makes for a great experience and knowledge when you go out into the big world. We are then able to understand problems and solve them quickly and efficiently.”
