Challenge of taking a leadership risk reaps its rewards

Each International Day at WISS, the Japanese community would perform a traditional dance called “Soran Bushi.” Last year, I thought we could do something more modern for the performance.

I have been learning hip-hop dance for more than five years, and it is one of my strengths. Thus, I volunteered to be the leader of a performance group and choreographed a dance for International Day. I started this activity at the end of December 2016 and it was completed in April 2017 — approximately four months of preparations were required before the actual performance. I felt very fulfilled with the completion of this activity.

This Creativity, Action, Service experience, part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, was an opportunity for me to broaden my perspectives in terms of collaboration and initiation. Up until the start of the activity, I avoided taking leadership opportunities because taking on a big role for something are qualities that I lack confidence. However, ultimately, I was convinced by my supervisor to challenge myself to try something new. I thought it would be a great opportunity to be a risk-taker, one of the attitudes of an IB student. Through this experience, I learned the importance of collaborating with other members as I learned this activity could not be completed without the cooperation of the members.

I was hugely impressed by the motivation to achieve the goal. Their attitudes towards dance lessons encouraged me. As the leader of the dance group, I tried my best to make ethical choices, for example, since the majority of the members had never danced on a stage before. In order to support them, I went to talk with individuals who had very little confidence. In addition, sometimes our preparation and lessons were interrupted by holidays and other personal issues. But still we overcame issues by being good communicators and having a backup plan. The continuous communication amongst the group members helped everybody in the group to forge great relationships with each other.

Through this unforgettable experience, I realized that everyone has power to influence others, and we can achieve anything as long as we opt ethical actions and continue collaborating as a group.
