Concordia students sit down with award winner

In March, M.T. Anderson, author of “Feed” and National Book Award winner, visited Concordia International School and mesmerized our literature class with a captivating conversation about his life.
He shared on a variety of topics, including the fictional filet mignon farms he invented in his writing, his experiences at an exorcism ceremony in rural Java, and the inherent entanglement between literature and social engagement.
Later, four of us were privileged to have the opportunity to continue the conversation over lunch, where we were able to draw more personal connections from Anderson’s works to our own lives.
Our discussion on Anderson’s biography about composer Dmitri Shostakovich touched me as a musician; our discussion on the influence of cultural world views on writing structure spoke to me as a third culture kid; our discussion on sci-fi, AI and the increasingly blurry definition of consciousness inspired me as an aspiring scientist.
Hearing Anderson share his own experience so generously helped us understand more deeply how art derives from real human interactions.
