Going green to get our globe clean
As part of Nord Anglia Education’s collaboration with UNICEF, students at NAIS Pudong have been working toward achieving the United Nation’s sustainable development goals. During the last academic year, students of all ages completed the world’s largest lesson to understand why the goals have been developed and subsequently worked on a number of projects. These included growing their own vegetables, making their own compost, investigating food waste and even making their own greenhouse out of used plastic bottles.
Four students were also lucky enough to visit the UNICEF headquarters in New York last summer and attended a high-level political forum side meeting. Here they presented to the President of the UN General Assembly and other diplomats about the importance of listening to the voices of children as we together work.
This year students are continuing their work and have already completed some exciting projects. These range from developing their own websites and videos to educate people about the dangers of plastic waste, to designing and making their own solar-powered charging station.
Additionally, they are close to completing a stationary bike which blends fruit for smoothies for the dining hall and we can’t wait to see it in action at lunch times.
Furthermore, our project week trips to Xiamen and Inner Mongolia in November enabled students to learn in the field. Year 8 students planted mangroves to combat coastal erosion on the Xiamen coastline and Year 12 planted trees to prevent further decertification in Inner Mongolia.
Both year groups spent time with local organizations to learn about the reasons for this important work and were able to make connections to their learning in school on the sustainable development goals.
