Harrow gets royal opening seal of approval

Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, the third son of Queen Elizabeth II of England, unveiled the commemorative plaque of Harrow International School Shanghai to officially open the school on June 7.
It is the fourth Harrow International School, after the first opened in Bangkok in 1998, the second in Beijing in 2005 and the third in Hong Kong in 2012.
Shanghai has a special significance due to the location of the newest member of the Harrow family of schools.
“Although Harrow Shanghai is our newest, it is a particularly significant school, as Shanghai is one of the world’s greatest cities where the East meets the West, and it is also the place where the most advanced cultural and educational ideas converge,” said Daniel Chiu, founder of Harrow International Schools and chairman and CEO of Harrow International, in his welcome speech.
He said the unveiling of Shanghai Harrow not only means that the Harrow family has added a new member, but also recognizes the cultural traditions and educational concepts of the school along with the expectations for the future of Chinese society, education, parents and pupils.
Harrow Shanghai is a co-educational school in operation in the Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone since 2016 for pupils aged 2-18.
With Pre-Nursery to Year 10 opened in August 2016 and Year 12 opened in August last year, the school now has about 300 students on campus. Its curriculum is based upon the English National Curriculum and there is a strong emphasis on an all-round education.
Kelly M Wailes, the acting head of Harrow Shanghai, said the school is unique, among international schools, for its holistic education to develop children in lots of different areas and “the idea of close, personal tutoring so that the teachers know the children really well and can help develop them academically and socially and emotionally along the way.”
She also said the house system in Harrow also helps the school to implement the ideas. There are four houses in Harrow Shanghai and students do lots of activities in their houses, ranging from inter-house competitions for sports and academic cups to charity work.
Harrow has long had strong links with British royalty. Harrow School itself, in northwest London, opened in 1572, with a royal charter from Queen Elizabeth I.
With its core mission of “Leadership for a Better World,” Harrow has educated many great leaders in all walks of life, such as former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the famous poet Lord Byron, the founding Prime Minister of India Pandit Nehru, and several Nobel Prize winners.
