The door in a wall: a window into my parents’ loveAyushi Joshi

Trying to keep my emotions in check, I drive past where I once lived. It’s been so long since I’ve been here. Driving past my favorite garden, memories come flooding back. “Addison!”, screamed my biological mother when the 6-year-old me fell. I’m 19 now and visiting my dead biological parents’ house.

I get out of the car, scared about awaits. I look around, thinking about all the reasons my parents would give me this house.

I snap out of my thoughts and look around. There is some dirt, which is probably because no one has been in this place for about a month, the amount of time it has been since the car crash in which my biological parents died. After exploring downstairs, I make my way upstairs. I find it strange that my room is exactly the same as the last time I saw it at the age of 7. Everything is the same. I open my closet expecting it to be the same also. When I get closer, I notice a door inside the wall. I don’t recall a door being in my closet. I open the door. What I see takes my breath away.

Opening the door, I see a room full of pictures of me. At first, I thought I was mistaken. But when I get closer, I’m sure these pictures are of me. In some, I was really little. Some, older. How did they get these and why would they want them? I start reading a stack of papers. They are not just ordinary papers. These were letters from my parents, to me. I read the last one and my heart shatters.

The last letter mentions they were going to visit me. Even though they never made it, I know now that they cared so much and always wanted what was best. I looked back at the door in the wall. Thinking how it changed every one of my thoughts about my parents.
