A musical window opens on Taiwan life

SOCIAL changes and love are the themes of two stunning musicals from Taiwan, which will hit the SAIC Shanghai Culture Square stage in the middle of this month.
“My Dear Nextdoor,” based on Liao Feng-teh’s short story of the same name, takes audiences back in time to the 1960s with two best friends.
The two men live next door to each other in a poor seaside village. They both experienced the ups and downs of rapid social changes back then, which also posed challenges on their friendship.
“The story was set in a time when the Taiwan economy was about to take off and everybody was inevitably influenced. Audiences will see a real-life village in Taiwan at that time with simple and honest residents as well as their tears and laughter,” said Xu Xiaoshun, one of the show’s stars.
Chia-Chia Peng, the other lead actor in the play, said that the story just fit in the memory of his early experience in rural Taiwan.
“It seems that everything we experienced in early life was for our interpretation of ‘My Dear Nextdoor’ on stage,” said Peng.
The performers sing in Minnan dialect, while all conversation is in Mandarin. The show stars 62-year-old Peng and 56-year-old Xu, and runs on March 16-17.
“The Rainbow of Time,” staged on March 24-25, tells a story about a mother-and-daughter relationship.
Based on Jimmy’s picture book of the same name, “The Rainbow of Time,” presented by Mr Wing Theater Company, will use dream-like stage settings with multimedia support. It stars young singers Candice Liu and Liao Yeun-Chieh.
“My Dear Nextdoor” and “The Rainbow of Time” are part of the Shanghai Culture Square’s 2018 Original Chinese Musical Festival.
