Famous landscape paintings on loan from the Tate

An exhibition featuring over 70 British landscape paintings is open to the public at the Shanghai Museum.
Boasted as the biggest show focusing on British landscape paintings in China, “Landscape of the Mind: Masterpieces from Tate Britain (1700-1980)” is a retrospective of 300 years of development in British landscape art.
The exhibition begins with the great topographical and classical painters of the 18th century, then moves through to the romantic, pre-Raphaelite and impressionist artists of the 19th century and finally reaches the pioneering modernists of the 20th century.
It includes many of the Tate’s finest oil paintings, watercolors and drawings, as well as prints, photographs and books.
Shanghai art lovers will be thrilled to find famous works by J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851), Thomas Gainsborough (1727-88) and John Constable (1776-1837), all heavyweight names in the history of art.
“The Tate is made up of four different galleries, among which Tate Britain is the earliest, with a history of over 120 years, and world-renowned for its extensive collection of landscape paintings,” said Yang Zhigang, director of the Shanghai Museum. “Its collection includes the essence of Turner’s works, which are undoubtedly the best in the world.”
The exhibition is divided into five parts — Looking and Dreaming, Classical and Romantic, Naturalism and Impressionism, The Early Modern Landscape and the Later Modern Landscape.
This exhibition is the first of a series of projects in which the Shanghai Museum teams up with the Tate.
