Manuscripts of literary greats on display
DRAFTS and letters of five British writers, together with some of the Chinese translations of the English novels, are being presented at Shanghai Library till the mid of April.
Opening today, the exhibition “Where Great Writers Gather: Treasures of the British Library” features Bronte’s manuscript of “Jane Eyre” with the climactic line from the conclusion chapter “Reader — I married him.”
Also on show are a letter of T.S. Eliot to Alison Tandy on “The Naming of Cats;” letters of D.H. Lawrence to his agent in London discussing the ban on his novel “The Rainbow” and alternative ways to reach out to readers; manuscripts of a sonnet dedicated to “Lord Byron” by Percy Bysshe Shelley and five pages from the original manuscript of “The Pickwick Papers” by Charles Dickens.
Items from Shanghai Library include a manuscript presented by George Bernard Shaw to Shanghai dramatist Huang Zuolin in 1937, with the inscription: “Up, China! The future of the eastern world is yours if you have the energy and courage to grasp it,” as well as a novel titled “Tan Ying Xiao Lu,” which was published in Shun Pao in 1872. It is the earliest Chinese translation of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels.”
