Yueju Opera troupe to present three works in town

PERFORMERS from the Little Hundred Flowers Yueju Opera Troupe of Zhejiang Province will present three representative productions from their repertoire in Shanghai late this month.
“Butterfly Lovers,” “Five Daughters Offering Felicitation” and “Lu You and Tang Wan” will hit the stage from May 25 to 27.
“Butterfly Lovers,” to be staged on May 25, tells the tragic love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. The troupe will present a newly revised version, which features more stunning stage effects and costumes.
The new version will also combine Yueju with elements from musicals and drama to reinterpret the legend.
On May 26, local audiences will be treated to “Five Daughters Offering Felicitation.” The classic play is based on a story from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and depicts the rise and fall of a family.
The romantic love story “Lu You and Tang Wan” will round up the troupe’s visit on May 27. It features famous poet Lu You and his wife Tang Wan who love each other so much, but Lu’s mother forces him to divorce her.
According to Liu Jiankuan, Party secretary of the troupe, the performances are part of the troupe’s cultural exchange program to celebrate the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up.
“We will create more plays and cultivate young, talented Yueju Opera performers,” Liu said.
Following the Shanghai stop, the troupe will visit Ningbo, Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Haikou.
