TCM hospital gets JCI accredited
Shanghai’s Longhua Hospital has been accredited by Joint Commission International, a world leader in health care quality and patient safety. It is the first comprehensive hospital featuring traditional Chinese medicine to receive such an accreditation.
The JCI accreditation process, endorsed and recognized by the World Health Organization, examines a hospital’s quality systems, medical processes and results to ensure health service standards and patients’ safety.
Accreditation is important to regulate the practice of a TCM hospital and help it practice in line with other Western medicine hospitals and receive recognition from international patients and insurance companies, Longhua Hospital said.
“It is also important to boost the standardization and internationalization of TCM in the world,” said Dr Xiao Zhen, president of Longhua Hospital.
“Different from Western medicine, TCM is usually experience-based. The process to apply and receive JCI accreditation in the past three years really helps us to recheck and regulate our practice and management.
“International and standardization means that every patient, no matter his or her nationality, can receive a stable, coherent and high-quality service,” Xiao said.
The hospital added and perfected over 1,000 rules in order to meet the JCI criteria. Xiao said there is no difference between a Western medicine hospital or a TCM hospital under a modern hospital management format, as health service quality and patients’ safety are the same.
Longhua Hospital uses 20 tons of Chinese herbs every day. Ensuring the safety of the herbs is a challenge for the hospital.
“Under the JCI examiner’s suggestion, we put a digital label on each pack of TCM. Every process should be scanned by bar code to prevent any mistake,” Xiao said.
“An IT-based system covers the operation of the hospital for high efficiency and accuracy.”
