Police crack down on illegally motorized tricycles

SHANGHAI traffic police said on Thursday that they have temporarily seized over 2,500 illegally motorized tricycles which carry goods this month as those vehicles pose danger to traffic safety.

The illegal tricycles, which are usually used to carry construction and kitchen waste as well as old furniture and home appliances to be recycled, added motors and batteries to the original non-motorized vehicles often at the cost of their braking performance, police said.

At the crossroads of Gonghexin Road and Changzhong Road in Jing’an District bordering Baoshan, police stopped four such tricycles on Thursday morning.

Owners of those tricycles were fined 50 yuan (US$7.3) for illegal motorizing of the vehicles and another 50 yuan if they didn’t possess licenses of the tricycles.

Police said tricycles owners should apply for licenses for the vehicles from the police, but Shanghai has ceased to give licenses to tricycles for some time.

They were also required to remove the motors and batteries from the tricycles on the scene, and if they couldn’t produce purchase proofs of the vehicles, their tricycles would be temporarily taken into the hands of police until the proofs are handed over to the police.

One of the owners of the tricycles, a 62-year-old man surnamed Lu, said he purchased the motorized tricycle for 4,700 yuan two years ago and has been making a living with it transporting construction waste from residential complexes nearby to recyclers.

Lu said his tricycle, when fully loaded, still is not so fast as many e-bikes, but it can carry much more goods than non-motorized tricycles.

Police estimate that a motorized tricycle can carry 500 to 600 kilograms of goods.
