Foreigners’ bravery rewarded

THREE foreigners — two Russian students and a French teacher — were awarded a total of 10,000 yuan (US$1,450) yesterday by the government for rescuing a drowning girl last year.

Together with nine others, they stood out in a public election of “Top 10 Good Deeds in Shanghai 2016,” organized by the city’s ethics promotion office.

Last May 15, the three foreigners, from Shanghai’s Jian Qiao University, saw someone struggling in the river near their campus and rushed to the rescue.

One of the three, who gave his name as Roman, said he was surprised when he was informed three days ago that the trio would be awarded for saving the girl.

“I didn’t think about anything when I jumped into the water, because I had to save her even though she could be attempting suicide,” he told Shanghai Daily after the ceremony.

Roman is a student of the university’s international design school and is in his third semester in Shanghai.
