Hospital offers HPV vaccine
QIU Qiong, a 35-year-old mother of two, became the first person to receive the 4-valent human papilloma virus vaccine against cervical cancer at the Gynecology and Obstetrics Hospital of Fudan University yesterday.
The vaccine will be available gradually in 287 medical facilities across the city. The 3-dose segment costs 2,410.5 yuan (US$380.5), the Shanghai Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.
Qiu said her strong desire to receive the shots stems from the fact that she lost her mother due to cervical cancer seven years ago. Since then she has followed all the information regarding the HPV vaccine in the city.
The hospital said 117 women had registered with it to receive the injections.
Currently, 2-valent and 4-valent HPV vaccines are available on the mainland for the virus HPV 16 and 18, which is the cause of 70 percent of cervical cancers. The 4-valent vaccine also acts against the low-risk virus HPV 6 and HPV 11 that causes genital wart.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer to affect Chinese women between the ages of 15 to 44. Official figures show there are 130,000 new cases in the country every year, accounting for more than 28 percent of the world total.
