Jinshan Hospital ‘wards’ at community centers

SUBURBAN Jinshan Hospital of Fudan University said that it plans to extend the “combined wards” program that it has been working on for the last two years to other communities in the district.

With the availability of beds in hospitals an issue, Jinshan District has been promoting the idea of extended wards, wherein the neighborhood health care centers are allowed to accept patients.

Under this program, patients do not have to travel to far-off hospitals but can instead approach the local community medical centers for treatment.

Doctors from Jinshan Hospital make the rounds in the “combined wards” to treat the patients, who receive the same treatment as in the hospital — but only closer to home.

Officials from Jinshan Hospital emphasized that the community centers only deal with non-emergency cases.

In the event of a patient’s condition getting worse, he or she is rushed to Jinshan Hospital.

Currently there are two community health care centers — in Jinshanwei and Zhangyan towns — with the “combined wards.” Jinshanwei focuses on neural rehabilitation and hospice care while also accepting other patients, while Zhangyan specializes in chronic respiratory diseases.

Jinshan Hospital said yesterday that similar “combined wards” are coming up in Shihua and Shanyang neighborhood next.

It said that in the past two years it had sent 89 patients to the “combined wards” and had received 43 patients.

Shanghai’s health and family planning commission said yesterday that by the end of last year the city had established 40 regional or specialized “medical partnerships,” which connect different levels of hospitals and community health care centers. These provide health management and health care services for urban and rural residents alike.

Meanwhile, several experts from Zhongshan Hospital in downtown Xuhui District have moved to Jinshan Hospital.
