Milk-sickened pair get surgery

TWO infants suffering kidney stones due to drinking melamine-tainted baby formula underwent successful surgery at Fudan University's Children's Hospital yesterday.

The parents of 17-month-old Wang Baocai and 18-month-old Yan Yun heard the children would be discharged in three or four days if their condition remained stable.

Doctors used minimally invasive surgical methods, in which special instruments were inserted into the bodies of the infants through small holes to break up the stones and allow the material to be excreted naturally.

"My daughter is stable and hasn't cried after the surgery," said Yan Chaoli, a fish seller from Anhui Province and father of Yan Yun. "My wife and I feel better now. I hope the surgery can solve all her problems and allow her to grow up a healthy child."

Both infants drank Sanlu baby formula. They were found to have kidney stones when screened last year after products of Sanlu Group and another 21 Chinese diary makers were found to contain melamine. Six children died and nearly 300,000 fell ill.

"Most cases get better by themselves. Only a few infants have to receive therapy such as surgery," said Dr Zhou Wei, a pediatric expert.
