Be braced for the coldest weather yet

THE coldest period of the year is coming, marked by a wintry mix of freezing temperature and sleet, forecasters said.

Heavy rain fell on Wednesday night and continued for much of yesterday.

The city recorded an average precipitation of 20 to 30 milliliters in 20 hours from 8pm on Wednesday to 4pm yesterday, according to Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Yesterday morning, southern and northern parts of the city, including Jiading and Baoshan districts, saw soft hail and some snow with sleet in the regions last night.

There will be a short relief from rain this afternoon. But drizzle will hit the city again tomorrow afternoon, with heavier rain on Sunday.

Temperatures are forecast to range between 3 and 10 degrees Celsius.

Today is xiaohan, or minor cold, on the Chinese lunar calendar, which indicated the start of the coldest period of the year.

A strong cold front is set to arrive on Monday, bringing sleet and further chilling the city, with temperatures of between 2 and 5 degrees.

Sunshine will return on Tuesday but temperatures will continue to drop, with lows of around 1 degree forecast.
