2 held over signboard collapse at shop

TWO people in charge of a shop on Nanjing Road E., where a signboard collapsed and killed three pedestrians on Sunday night, have been placed under “coercive measures,” Huangpu District’s information office said yesterday.

Coercive measures include summons by force, bail, residential surveillance, detention or arrest. Other people linked to the case are also being investigated, the office said.

Six other people were injured in Sunday’s incident and taken to hospital. All are in a stable condition, the office said.

An investigation by police and district officials has found that TR Town Corporation Ltd’s Adventure Castle shop at No. 132 — which has been selling souvenirs, electronics and clothing on Nanjing Road E. since 2015 — failed to check the safety of its signboards during this year’s flood season.

The Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall administration office had previously urged all shops on the street to take precautions with regard to signboards and other outdoor advertising during typhoon weather.

According to Huangpu officials, the pair, surnamed Li and Chen, had failed to carry out inspections despite two visits reminding them of their obligation.

The shop is less than 300 meters from the Bund and the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall.
