20 busted for illegal transit at city airports

MORE than 20 people were caught illegally entering or leaving China via the city’s two airports in July, according to the Shanghai General Station of Immigration Inspection.

On July 26, two foreigners, whose nationalities were not revealed, arrived at Pudong International Airport from a Southeast Asian country. Police noticed irregularities with their passports, and the pair then allegedly admitted to attempting to enter the country illegally.

The duo said they paid US$3,000 to a smuggler in their home country and obtained fake passports.

They were said to have first used their own passports to enter a Southeast Asian country and then attempted to fool Shanghai immigration inspectors with the fake travel documents. Their goal, allegedly, was to transfer to a third country via Shanghai.

In another case, police caught a man surnamed Jin who repeatedly traveled overseas with a fake passport.

When he arrived in Shanghai, police found he was speaking with a southern Chinese accent but it was written on his passport that he was born in Beijing. Police checked his passport and found it was a forgery.
