3 big winners from VAT-receipt draw

THREE people were declared winners after taxation authorities announced the results of a draw of value-added tax receipts.

The names and the identities of the winners were not released but the Shanghai Office of the State Administration of Taxation said the top winner pocketed 400,000 yuan (US$63,538), and two others 50,000 yuan each.

The draw is part of the government’s efforts to promote awareness about the importance of value-added taxes.

Consumers in Shanghai are being urged to insist on the value-added tax receipts for their spendings in the city.

On receiving the tax receipts, they can scan the code immediately on WeChat and Alipay for first-round prizes of 5, 10 and 100 yuan, which can be claimed immediately.

The second-round draw is announced at a later date. There will be three winners — one 400,000 yuan, and two 50,000 yuan prizes. The first-round winners can also try again but must register to make them eligible for the draw.

The authorities have been trialing the lottery-like scheme since December 2017.

“The trial is to ensure extensive publicity, raise awareness and participation of citizens on value-added taxes.

“This way we can better regulate and improve the invoicing and receipt usage for both operators and consumers,” the administration said yesterday.

Yesterday’s 400,000-yuan winning invoice code is 3100172320 and the invoice number was 57878753. The three winners were all individual consumers. The winning numbers can be checked on the official website of Shanghai taxation bureau, Alipay, WeChat and Weibo.

Winners should collect their prize money at designated spots within 60 days after the results are announced.

The draw covers four service sectors — catering, accommodation, entertainment and decoration. Around 60,000 businesses in Shanghai are involved in the scheme.
