Electricity executive who took millions in bribes jailed for life

FENG Jun, the former general manager of State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Co, was sentenced yesterday to life in jail for corruption.
The 60-year-old abused his powers and took bribes worth more than 43.4 million yuan (US$6.3 million), by himself or with others, Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People’s Court said, adding that he was unable to account for property valued at 76 million yuan.
All of his personal assets had been seized, the court said.
Feng was investigated for graft in October 2014 and in January 2015 was placed under “coercive measures,” which can lead to summons by force, bail, residential surveillance, detention and arrest. He was brought to the court 10 months later.
Profiles showed Feng started as a wire operator in 1979 in an electricity supply station in his hometown of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province.
Over a 20-year period, he rose up the ranks to become general manager of the State Grid’s Jiangsu subsidiary. In December 2011, he was transferred to Shanghai.
According to the Legal Daily website, investigators seized 4,293 pieces of valuable goods, including paintings, antiques, jewelry, jade, watches and ivory, estimated to be worth about 53 million yuan, from his home.
Also, he was found to own four properties, valued at 69 million yuan, and to have 39 million yuan in his savings and stock accounts, the website reported.
Feng was reported to have “played tricks” to obtain houses without paying a penny for them.
According to the website, a real estate company affiliated to the State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co had built a residential complex and Feng wanted a villa there. This was in 2007 when he was the deputy general manager.
Feng was said to have asked businessman Li Hong to buy a villa for 3.9 million yuan and transfer the ownership to him. Later, he asked his wife to return the money to Li.
Reportedly, Li had thought that he was just helping Feng, a high-ranking state company executive, to cover up the fact that Feng was the actual owner. But three years later, Feng demanded the money back from Li.
According to Feng, Li had given him a bank account that held 4 million yuan and nearly US$100,000. And some time later, he obtained a further 3.9 million yuan from Li, the website reported.
Due to their “close relationship,” Li’s company became a supplier to State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Co after Feng started to lead the company, the website reported.
