Farming to get US$2b in funding

THE Shanghai government said it will invest more than 13.8 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion) over the next three years to create a national demonstration zone for modern agriculture.

The money will be used to improve agricultural facilities, introduce supporting technologies and train farmers, the city’s agriculture commission said yesterday.

The funding will also help to improve the quality of water used for agriculture and forestry, and to protect the agricultural environment, it said.

The primary aim of the investment is to ensure that by 2017, Shanghai is able to supply 90 percent of residents’ demands for vegetables.

It will also seek to guarantee that at least 99 percent of all of the agricultural products grown in Shanghai are capable of passing the highest quality standards.
