Heat lingers as typhoon heads ashore

SCORCHING summer heat will continue in Shanghai, although a typhoon bearing down on China’s southern coast will bring winds and possible showers, the local weather authority said.
Typhoon Maria is expected to bypass northeastern Taiwan in the wee hours of this morning, before making landfall in coastal areas of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, according to forecasters.
China Central Meteorological Station yesterday released a red typhoon alert, the highest alert on its four-tier warning system, and an orange rainstorm alert, the third-highest alert, while warning of gusty winds and torrential rains for Taiwan, Fujian and Zhejiang today.
At 5:08pm yesterday, Shanghai Meteorological Bureau released a blue gale alert, the lowest on the four-tier system, and warned of strong winds today. Residents in coastal areas are advised to brace for powerful gales. Brief showers may also hit the city.
The mercury will reach highs of 32 degrees today and tomorrow. Temperatures will soar to 35 degrees on Friday, followed by a string of scorching days with similar highs, forecasters said.
